Geologic Atlas of the United States, Sierra Nevada Folios.
United States Geological Survey (1894- 1900)

This Web-on-CD provides scanned map and text page images of fifteen folios published  1894-1900 by the United States Geological Survey.  Entitled Geologic Atlas of the United States, the folios describe the geology and topography of the Sierra Nevada of California. The area covered by each folio is shown on the index map (right).

Maps Available (see folios list and samples below): The Sierra Nevada folios differed in the types and scales of the maps included. All of the folios map and photo pages, as well as images of the text, are included on this CD.

The quadrangle map images on this CD include:

topography (all folios)

economic geology (all folios)

physical, area, or historical geology (all folios, but variously named)

structure-section (selected folios)

mining claims (Mother Lode District Special and Nevada City Special folios only).

Navigating the Web:
The Web-on-CD is designed for use with Internet Explorer or Netscape on PCs (Mac users may experience some problems). A "Contents" page is provided for each folio. Each folio "Contents" page has links to each page of the folio: cover, text, maps, and photos. The maps are in various scales, ranging from 1:14,400 to 1:250,000. Each map sheet is divided into four page-size JPEG images for easy on-screen viewing and for printing on letter-size paper. On the folio index page, four thumbnail images are arranged to provide an overview of each map sheet. Because the original sheet borders have been trimmed off, the legends are provided as separate images.

Report Text: These folios described the geology of the Sierra Nevada, with special emphasis on the known and expected mining resources, and on the mines and mining activities going at the time. Typically, there are six to ten pages of report text in each folio, and each text page is the size of a quadrangle map.

Printing Map and Text Images: Text and photo pages are GIF images, and map pages are JPEG images. Printing these images from your browser may not give good formatting results. Instead, you may wish to right-click the image and save it to a folder for printing with a graphics program, or with a freeware graphics viewer/printer application.

Hardware and Software Requirements: This web-on-CD can be navigated on a PC using your Web browser. Each quarter-sheet image is a 4-megabyte JPEG-format file, and is compressed roughly 10:1, requiring more than 64 MB of memory to easily open, view, and print these images.

Below are a reduced screenshot and thumbnails of four representative maps from the folios.

This Web-on-CD is $12.00.
